labor day weekend

So I have really thought about this and I can't quite understand why so many people have to work on labor day. I'm glad I can get it off, but it is not really labor day unless we rest from labor, right? I understand that some must work, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, police, fire, and rescue. But why do malls have to be open, or resturants? Is we really that needy, not to mention greedy of a people that we want everyone else to work so we can play. For crying out loud, Someone should put a stop to that. Maybe if more people stayed home with family on this day less of the "Have-to-work people" (the ones listed above) would actually have to work.

Well, I don't have to work and I plan on spending it in Holland with family. I might just refuse to go out and "play" at other peoples work.

Simple economic principles control these things, not individual thinking (although it is the sum of individual thinking that controlls economic principles). As long as it is economically viable (and thus rational) to work on such days, people will continue to work. Companies usually also offer incentives(double time) on such holidays, thus making it even more rational to work.

That said, government supercedes in much of economics and has the power to mandate days off. This only applies to government workers however since the government cannot stop us from working if we want to.
