Our sermon in church yesterday was taken from Luke 8:22-25. These verses tell us how Jesus calmed the storm on the lake where He and his disciples were in a boat. The disciples were frightened by the storm and woke Jesus in fear. They feared they would drown. Jesus calmed the storm but questioned where their faith was.
The pastor pointed out that there are three types of people: those who are entering a storm, those who are in the mist of a storm, and those who are just getting out of a storm. He then pointed out that God puts us in these storms for to learn three lessons: Perseverance, Reverence (trust), and that Jesus' victory is a sure thing. He pointed out that we must know that our lessons are learned in the storm, we must learn to exchange our fears for other fears (the disciples exchanged fear of storm for fear of God), and we need to know that God will get us through the storm to Victory!
While listening to this sermon I was reminded of what someone wrote in a letter to me when Seth and I were going through our big storm, the loss of our twins. This person wrote that "God doesn't take us out of the storm but He promises to walk through it with us." Then I remembered the song "Praise You in this Storm" by Casting Crowns. Which brought me back to remembering that no matter what the storm or how horrible we think it is, we MUST remember to Praise God through it all. He is the one who placed us there, and were there to learn something and to come out on the other side stronger and more victorious than when we went in.
"Trouble comes not from the storm but how we handle it" --Pastor Scott
This is a great reminder as well that we must handle these storms with prayer and praise to let us get through the storms with all three lessons.
I loved this sermon and it was a great to hear. I'm thankful for every storm I go through whether large or small, because each one has made me who I am. And I know the storms ahead will change me and form me as well.
