Learning something New

I have been working hard on so many projects this year, already. I have done a couple baby shower gifts, a casserole carrier, I'm working on some heart shaped pot holders, and today, I am learning a new skill.

Today I went for my first lesson for learning to quilt. It was an hour and a half and was a great time! I'm starting small and only doing a 9 square block quilt that will be around 15 inches square. A nice wall hanging. I plan to move up quickly though.

I'm learning to quilt by hand, not by machine. My grandma, who lives next door, is giving me lessons and teaching me the finer points of quilting. She has been quilting since around 1988 and made numerous quilts. Eight of them have been for all of her grandchildren and were given as gifts to them for their wedding. My parents and my Aunt and Uncle also have received a hand-made quilt from her. She worked on them when they would drive to Florida and back every year. She doesn't remember why she got into quilting.

There is so much more I learned in my quilting lesson, today, than I would have from a book. I enjoyed spending time with my grandma and talking and learning from her. I also enjoy the fact that I can ask her a question and get a demonstration and a verbal response without having to first search the internet! Thus the reason I wanted to learn from a person, not a book or online.

Thanks, Grandma! I was very blessed by your teaching today! Can't wait for next week!

What a great memory! There is no better teacher than your loved one. I wish my great-grandma would have passed on her crochet skills to the next generation. I've had to resort to teaching myself using youtube. Not the easiest thing!
